ANSWERING THE THREAT - 242nd Armored Battalion - Khuzestan 1982 Die 21. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Iranian Army 21st Infantry Division combined 3 armored battalions equipped with Chieftains (243rd Battalion, 250th Battalion, 242nd Battalion) into a single battle group called the Afshin group. During the battle of Ahwaz, the Afshin group smashed Iraqi tanks at long range on the KhoramshahrAhwaz road, stopping the Iraqi advance and resulting in the retreat of Iraqi armor. During the last week of September 1980, the Iranian Army 92nd Armored Division, 1st Brigade, 232nd Armored Battallion defeated a massive Iraqi attack near the village of Foli-Abad, stopping their advance toward Ahwaz. In the second year of the war, Iran began dedicated offensive attacks to recapture Iranian cities from Iraqi occupation. The 21st infantry division was a key to the success of those operations, particularly the Afshin group in the liberation Khoramshahr. On May 7th 1982, the largest armor battle between Iran and Iraq occurred west of Khoramshahr in Shalamche. The Iraqi 2nd Armored Brigade went up against the Iranian 275th Armor Battalion and the Afshin group, which resulted in the destruction or capture of two Iraqi tank brigades. After that event, the Iranian army pushed forward to Khoramshahr and liberated the city after only a few days of combat. The Takom Chieftain Mk.5/5P (#2027) was used to create this diorama, along with the ChMZAP 524G Semi-Trailer from the Takom KRAZ-4664 (#2019). The basic colors of the vehicles were airbrushed A.MIG-929 Olive Drab Shine acrylic color. The resin crew was sculpted by the very talented Andrew Cairnes of New Zealand and worked perfectly for this project, with only minor modifications to the extremities. The palm tree was made using the die-cut vinyl palm fronds from Hart of the South Models, and the trunk of the tree was sculpted from Aves Apoxy Clay around a threaded steel core. Extra accessories used to supplement the diorama were made from scratch; the signs were constructed from Evergreen styrene elements and the crushed oil drum was made from lead foil. Everything on this diorama was painted & weathered with products from AMMO of Mig Jimenez. Over all, this was an extremely fun and satisfying project. The Chieftain has always been an attractive subject for me personally, and it was pure pleasure to work with the Takom kit and Ammo products in this diorama. I owe my good friend Vorya Heidaryan from Iran a big debt of gratitude for helping me to research this project and make it as accurate a representation as possible.
